Portraiture.

By definition, portraits must be to some extent figurative – a ‘likeness‘ of some sort being an essential requirement.

Hopefully though, it should also try to communicate other aspects of the subject than merely their physical appearance at the time of sitting and better still, contrive by its painterly qualities to excite the viewer, even those to whom the subject may not be known.  

The best portraits, in my estimation, fulfil all three criteria.
